The Spiritual Side of Ayurveda

The Spiritual Side of Ayurveda

When people ask me what is Ayurveda, I find my mouth full of all that it encompasses.  How do you simply put such a profound, potential life changing science?  Granted, simply put, Ayurveda is the “Science of Life”.  What that entails depends on the individual asking.  Some asking are ready to make the diet changes that support and bring balance to their individual body constitution.  Some asking are ready to make the necessary lifestyle changes that will connect them to health and awareness.  Some asking are ready to become more aware of their minds and how their mind is affecting their health.  While others asking are ready to hear more.

I have been practicing Ayurveda for over six years and have seen a profound difference not only in my health, but in my spiritual well being.  I have never really had any medical conditions that could be named by western medicine.  What I have had were considered common conditions that the body has which included constipation, dry skin, insomnia, anxiety and worry.  While none were so severe they disrupted my life I did see how they disrupted my mind and therefore did affect my health.  Ayurveda does what western medicine doesn’t and can see the onset of disease before it affects the physical body in a chronic or disease way.  My conditions, though not serious according to western medicine, were the first steps to more deep-seated disturbances in my physical body and my mind.  Not only did Ayurveda balance my body to where I did not have even one of my conditions, but it opened up a new awareness.

According to Ayurveda, the disease process begins when we forget our connection to God or our higher consciousness.  We forget God by distracting ourselves away from that connection.  Distraction can come from eating foods that are not healthy for our bodies and from repeating lifestyle habits that we know are not beneficial for us.  These distractions lead us to an even bigger distraction when it manifests in the body as disease.

When the body has any disease or condition, be it a simple condition such as constipation, or dry skin, it is the body’s way of saying that something is out of balance, something is wrong.  That something that is wrong is our mind forgetting its connection with the divine and forgetting, ultimately, opens the doorway to disease.  When we don’t listen to the voice of the body (our higher Self) then the condition or out of balance state has the potential to go deeper in the system and create a disease in the body.  The disease can then become an identity the individual takes and this identity is a way to distract the mind.  When the mind is distracted on to the physical body, the mind cannot be aware of anything else.  Also, when the mind is distracted on the physical body it cannot see its connection to anything but the physical body.  Everything else ceases to exist except for the current condition of the body.

On the flip side, it is also said that disease can lead you to your higher consciousness or your connection to God.  Everything that happens is an opportunity to tune in to the divine and learn what it is here to teach us.  By not making the disease part of our identity, we allow there to be space between the disease and ourselves and we are in a better position to observe the disease and its purpose in our life.  The space of observance is our awareness.  When we become aware we are in a position to learn.

Through implementing Ayurvedic principles I was able to take away a lot of the clutter and thought distractions of my mind in order for me to see a connection to my divine source.  I did this by seeing my physical body as something different than who I ultimately was and therefore could observe what role my conditions had in my life without becoming attached.  I observed that whenever I felt my mind becoming out of control I could track it to not eating correctly for my body and or lifestyle habits that I knew weren’t good for me. It is my belief that my awareness was able to expand due to my physical body being free from disturbances therefore having a clear mind to see and feel my connection to the divine.

Now, I am not perfect by any means and I still do things that I know is not healthy for my body, but I try to never let my conscious mind become distracted in who I am.  Through implementing Ayurvedic principles I have been able to keep my mind and body free from distractions.  These principles are tools that can be used so that everyone can know when their body or mind is becoming distracted and what they can do to focus again.  Ayurveda is here for anyone at any level and can empower each person with knowledge of themselves and of their higher purpose.  Ayurveda gives you the tools to keep your physical body healthy and your mind clear of distractions.  It is the worlds oldest medical system and has only the highest good of everyone as its goal.
